Thunderbolts* – or should that be *The New Avengers – enjoyed a $160 million opening weekend and could well attract a new audience after Marvel revealed its new title.

The new movie brings back Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Sebastian Stan, Hannah John-Kamen, Wyatt Russell and Olga Kurylenko as the antiheroes reluctantly team up to battle a deadly new threat.

But by the end of the movie, the Thunderbolts have a brand-new name which Marvel has already officially spoiled, and it's one that has a major impact on the future of the MCU.

What to Read Next

It's an MCU movie, so you know there will be credit scenes, but if you're heading to see it after being enticed by its new name, you might be wondering whether you need to stay until the very end of the credits to see everything.

So here's our definitive guide to how many Thunderbolts* credit scenes there are, and what they mean for Avengers: Doomsday.

How many credit scenes does Thunderbolts have?

We can confirm that Thunderbolts* has two credit scenes to enjoy – and one of them is a must-see for fans.

The mid-credit scene – which comes after the first bit of animated credits – is a bit of an MCU throwback as it's not setting up anything; it's just a fun gag that links back to an earlier moment in the movie.

However, the post-credit scene is a major tease of a future crossover ahead of Avengers: Doomsday. It also provides extra context on what happened after the big reveal at the end of Thunderbolts*, but you'll have to see it to know what we mean.

The first part of the credits is not necessarily a credit scene, but you might want to pay attention there too. It's not just your standard list of names and has something extra to show you.

But if you missed them or just want to know what they are, here's what happens in the Thunderbolts* credit scenes and what they mean.

Thunderbolts credit scenes explained

The mid-credit scene is just a pay-off of a gag that sees Red Guardian extremely proud that now they're officially The New Avengers, they're on a Wheaties box. Not that the person he's pestering seems that bothered by it.

It's a cute scene, but not impactful to the MCU's future unlike the post-credit scene, which is massive and, surprisingly, was only filmed about a month ago on the actual set of Avengers: Doomsday.

The post-credit scene is set 14 months after the events of the movie. The Thunderbolts are still The New Avengers and are set up in Val's Watchtower, but it's clear the public still don't completely buy this new team.

Even Sam Wilson is filing for copyright of the Avengers name, potentially for his own team or one he's going to set up. Red Guardian suggests they rebrand to "New Avengerz", but Yelena is more concerned with the ongoing "space crisis".

It's not entirely clear what this entails, but they've got another issue to worry about as an unidentified space craft enters the orbit. A satellite image shows the space craft has a Fantastic Four logo, as a burst of Michael Giacchino's score plays.

We'll likely see exactly what led this craft to come into the 'main' MCU universe in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

However, it's the first big tease of Avengers: Doomsday which, many fans speculate, will involve incursions and a potential showdown between the Fantastic Four's universe and the main MCU universe.

Are they right? We'll find out more when The Fantastic Four: First Steps lands in cinemas in July.
